Friends of Strays Sets New Record For Adoptions In A Year

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Friends of Strays, St. Petersburg’s oldest no-kill animal shelter, has set a new shelter record for completed adoptions in a single year. The previous record, 1,276 was set in 2020. Friends of Strays completed its 1,277th adoption Saturday morning.As of Monday morning, we’ve completed 1,290 adoptions, helping 952 cats and 338 dogs find loving homes. We completed 159 adoptions in October, a new record for adoptions in a month. The previous record was 155 in May of this year.
While we’re happy to set a new shelter record for adoptions, adopting out animals is only one small part of the work Friends of Strays does to serve animals and those that love them in Pinellas County.
Each year, Friends of Strays donates more than 30,000 pounds of pet food to community partners like the St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center for distribution to families in need.
Later this month, we’ll host a free dog vaccine clinic at Daystar Life Center where we except to provide free vaccines to hundreds of dogs. The clinic is scheduled for November 13 from 9 am - 12 pm.
All of this is in addition to the work Friends of Strays does in the area of spaying and neutering community (feral) cats at no cost to Pinellas County residents through the Pinellas Cats Alive! program. To date, more than 840 community cats have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and given flea and tick treatment before being returned to their outdoor homes in better condition than they arrived. This is the most humane way to control community cat populations and Friends of Strays is proud to operate this program and serve Pinellas County.
