Friends of Strays and The Saint Petersburg Free Clinic Announce Pet Food Pantry Partnership

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

Beginning Monday, February 25th, Friends of Strays will be joining forces with the St. Petersburg Free Clinic for our Community Pet Food Pantry. The Friends of Strays’ Pet Food Pantry has been providing low-income households with free cat and dog food since 2015. The program has allowed for community members to come to the shelter during open hours to collect food for their pets, but as of February 25th, they will be redirected to the St. Petersburg Free Clinic at 836 3rd Avenue North.

Friends of Strays started the Pet Food Pantry in an effort to keep pets with their families and out of shelters. Since 2015, we have distributed more than 180,000 pounds of cat and dog food to qualified, low-income families throughout Pinellas County. The program is solely run on donations from the public. If you would like to donate to the Pet Food Pantry, food will still be collected at Friends of Strays.

“This partnership is a win-win for all parties involved,” says Friends of Strays CEO, Dara Eckart. “With the St. Petersburg Free Clinic overseeing distribution of the Pet Food Pantry, community members can learn about and benefit from their extensive program list while collecting their pet food. It also allows our staff to allocate more time doing what we do best -- caring for and adopting out homeless pets!”

The St. Petersburg Free Clinic is a multi-service, independent, not-for-profit human services agency providing community neighbors assistance with food, shelter and health care. They have been caring for the underserved facing temporary emergency needs throughout Pinellas County since 1970. It is comprised of eight programs that are a beacon of hope for families and individuals who fall through the crack of existing systems and services.
